Final Poster Design

This is my final poster to celebrate 100 years of GF Smith paper.

Evaluation
At the beginning of task 2 I didn't know where to start and wasn't sure where to go with my ideas. After re-reading the brief and looking in detail at what was asked I realised I needed to celebrate the 100 years and wanted to use contrasting colours that stand out and grab the viewers attention.

I chose this design because I thought it would be the best way to portray celebration for the company. The colours I've used i feel work really well together! The type works well with the image slanted. I varied the type in size so that the main things stand out and so that it kept the poster interesting.  I've left a lot of white space because i didn't feel the poster needed something in the background.  I thought it would look too complicated and would take it away from the image that I want everyone to notice.

I feel this design does celebrate the 100 years of GF Smith Paper and i'm really happy with the outcome and how its printed.

Photos I Could Use For Task 2 Final Poster

Colours look good. Stands out.

I really like the two below, but when i re-read the brief i realised the poster has to be portrait

Like the contrast!

I think its good it says 100 but its not clear to read

Below is my favourite and the image i have chosen to develop!

Out of the list I created in my previous blog I have chosen FIreworks/Explosion and Presents/Gifts to celebrate the 100 years of GF Smith Paper.

(Development with type on the Photograph I've Chosen is in my Sketchbook)

Research For Poster

Research for Final Piece
For my final 3D piece for the GF Smith paper poster I searched what the word 100 meant and what came to my head (documented in sketchbook). Then I re-read the brief and saw the sentence 'Construct a poster celebrating 100 years of GF Smith Paper Company', I then saw the sentence 'What can you construct that celebrates the multitude of uses of paper.'  Whilst reading the brief over and over the word celebrate kept standing out to me and suddenly after weeks of not knowing what to do a few ideas came to mind. (It always helps to keep reading the brief).

Celebrating to me means:
  • Fireworks (explosions)
  • Presents / Gifts
  • Happiness
  • Birthdays (100 years of GF Smith Paper)
  • Bright colours
  • Partys
  • Balloons
  • Alcohol
And the list goes on ...
(my thumbnails are shown in my sketchbook)

Images found for celebration:

I also looked at jack in the boxes because i thought they were clever how they hold the surprise in and once they cant any longer then burst out with celebration.

Previous Posters For GF Smith

I've looked at whats previously been shown by GF Smith as inspiration to what they usually look for and whats been acceptable before. Most of this work is for promotional use.

Inspiration for Poster

Julene Harrison
I really like Julene's work.  I especially like the top image and the use of different colours, they all work really well together!  She cuts all the lettering/imagery out using a scalpel and does it really neatly.  Another way of doing it is using Laser cutting, and for my poster that could work really well.  I could layer up colours and still have a detailed image.

The backgrounds are always important to make the text stand out.
2 colours work well (eg. white on black)
The gradient below works well though due to the text being all the same colour.
The photo frame blends with the image.

Julene also does illustration cuttings but the type ones for me are the most inspiring!

However the image below works as the middle section isn't as detailed but still looks really interesting. The text layout fits well with the whole image.

Helen Musselwhite
Again Helen uses a laser cutter / scalpel and creates a 3D feel to her work.  The colours always work well together and blend nicely.

Paper cut out using laser cutter then drawn on gives it more depth.

Jolis Paons
I put this in my research just because i was really interested in how the dress is completely made out of paper.  The pleats look detailed and realistic.

Emma Van Leest

Very delicate and detailed. Like the use of just two colours.

Its like a tiny village/different world.

Molly Jey
Molly Jey's work is really interesting.  Even though the imagery is in a frame it jumps out of the frame and stands out as shown below.

Yulia Brodskaya
I love Yulia's work!  I find it hard to understand how she's actually managed to achieve this though.  I think its a 3D base of text then its filled in?! I want to try this out!
